Servants Community Housing Inc (Servants) is a not for profit organization operating in the inner-Eastern suburbs of Melbourne in the suburbs of Hawthorn and Kew. Originating out of Hawthorn West Baptist Church in 1986, Servants enjoys charitable status and has a proud history of providing outstanding long-term community housing to 65 single people, all on low-incomes and at risk of homelessness. The church has a strong tradition of living in a caring community and has grafted this tradition into the model of housing we provide. Our live-in onsite House Managers are a central feature of this model.
We are recognized by the Housing Registrar of Victoria as a Registered Housing Provider. We lease and manage 2 large properties, one in Hawthorn and one in Kew and house a combined total of 65 single people.
Our reputation within the housing sector and the City of Boroondara communities are exemplary.
We believe that housing people well is fundamentally important; but have a still stronger understanding that people do better when they live in functional, safe communities.
Most people who are housed by Servants have encountered significant difficulties within their lives – most have, and continue to struggle with significant mental health difficulties. Residents are required to be capable of independent living. They each have their own small room and share common facilities and we provide breakfast and an evening meal. All of our residents claim a Government level pension and residents pay a fee which covers all expenses including food and utilities.
Servants believe in advocating for those that we house; in recent years we have produced 3 pieces of theatre, a book and a documentary that detail both the hopes and struggles of those that we house.
The people who work for Servants do not see their roles simply as a job – more of a lifestyle. Our Housekeepers in High St Kew will be leaving early 2014 and we are seeking a mature couple to continue the great work they have done.
Housekeepers live on site free of charge and have their utility expenses covered. They are free to attend their paid employment off site however our ideal Housekeepers would have the flexibility to be in attendance at the house during business hours to attend to maintenance contractors and accept deliveries. Hours and payment are flexible, if you feel called to do this work, please contact Matt Maudlin, our CEO, on 0407 891 052 to discuss the position and various options in more detail.
