• Welcome to Servants Community Housing!

    Picture of Residents
    Two of our happy residents

Servants Community Housing has been operating affordable accommodation and safe housing for those on low incomes for over thirty years in Hawthorn and in Kew.

Our passion is built around offering a structure in which vulnerable individuals—many of whom suffer from long-term mental illnesses—can live in relative comfort.

All too often we find our residents have been afforded little dignity or respect in their lives prior to being housed by Servants. Perhaps they have been homeless, they may have left a psychatric ward for the first time, experienced a relationship breakdown, loss of employment, substance issues... Residents find a safe and secure place with Servants and tend to stay with us for many years, enjoying a strong connectedness and sense of community. That’s because our model of housing is breathtakingly simple, founded on the belief that each individual is worthwhile.

Please join us on the journey as we seek to offer respect, dignity and hope to some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

Servants launches a new book

Servants Community Housing is thrilled to announce that our second book, Narrative, will be released on Friday 31 October.

Following on from the success of our original publication, Anthology, in 2011, we take pleasure in inviting you to attend the launch of Narrative, which tells the stories of some of the residents who call their Servants housing ‘home’.

This project was undertaken with seven Year Eleven students from Melbourne Girls College, Methodist Ladies College, Trinity Grammar School and Xavier College.

The launch will be held on Friday 31 October at The Great Hall at Xavier College, Barkers Rd in Kew. The evening will commence at 7.00 pm and conclude at 9.30 pm, with speeches at 7.30 pm. In true Servants tradition, the books have been published to be given away.

There is no cost for tickets to the launch event, but please consider making a donation towards publication costs on the night. Bookings are essential, so please reserve your tickets.

We would be hugely appreciative if you could extend this invitation to your personal circle of friends and networks.

If you have any inquiries, please contact Matt at matt@servants.org.au.

We hope that you will consider attending this landmark event in Servants history!

Outside the Box – a new theatre production in partnership with Candlelight productions

Candlelight Productions, in partnership with Servants Community Housing,

invites you to experience life…

Outside the Box

How do you know when you’re home?

Inspired by the real life stories of residents in our rooming house in Hawthorn, this group devised performance explores issues of homelessness and home.

A small team of experienced actors met, dined with and got to know people who are technically ‘homeless’. They interweave drama, movement, music, puppetry and multimedia to tell true stories of trauma, loss and stigma, but also of community, respect, dignity and hope.

Outside the Box is a celebration of what it is to be human. It is entertaining, funny, moving, thought provoking and empowering… You’ll come away with more questions than answers, but also delighting in the art of making a house a home.

This is an invitation… to anyone who has tried to make their own home, or who has ever found themselves homeless, either physically or in spirit. It is essential viewing for anyone who houses homeless people, shapes policy on housing, or wants to raise the next generation of leaders.

Above all, this is an entertaining show, full of uplifting stories.

Come and join us at the table.
