A Seat at the Table

40 invites for 40 years of Servants

Sadly, isolation plays a significant role in the lives of many people at risk of homelessness.

For some of our residents, it has been years since they’ve simply sat around someone’s dining table and shared a meal.

As part of Servants Community Housing’s 40th anniversary year, we’re inviting members of local churches to share their meal table with one or two residents.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus consistently welcomed those who were excluded and called His followers to practise generous hospitality. We hope this initiative provides a simple, meaningful way for churches to live out that invitation.

We also warmly welcome others in our wider community who share this desire to extend hospitality and connection.

To ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone, all hosts and residents participate in a simple approval and matching process, with a Servants staff member attending each meal.

If you’d like a Servants representative to visit your church and share more about this initiative, or if you’d like to become a host yourself, please contact Jordie at communications@servants.org.au.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you ask for referees?

To help us provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Will I be alone with the resident?

No. A Servants staff member will attend the meal.

How are residents invited?

Because places are limited, residents are invited based on availability and thoughtful matching with hosts. We hope to offer this opportunity to as many residents as possible over time.

Can I choose who comes?

We thoughtfully match residents and hosts based on personalities, interests and any relevant need.

Is there a set date or time?

No. This initiative will run throughout the remainder of our 40th anniversary year. Once you’re approved as a host, we’ll work with you to arrange a date and time that suits everyone.

Do I need to drive the residents?

No. Servants staff will arrange transport for residents and will attend the meal, so you can simply focus on sharing your table and enjoying the conversation.

How long should the meal last?

We suggest allowing around 1½ to 2 hours. This gives everyone plenty of time to enjoy the meal, get to know one another and share stories without the evening feeling rushed.

Is it lunch or dinner?

That’s up to you. Hosts can choose either lunch or dinner. We can work with your schedule and can be arranged with the resident and Servants staff.
