Become a House Manager with Servants

Live alongside residents at one of Servants’ community rooming houses, providing respect, dignity, hope and opportunity for people on low incomes and those at risk of homelessness. You’ll live rent-free at one of four conveniently-located Boroondara properties, have access to significant support resources, and be part of a community changing the way Melbourne responds to people in need.

Location: Hawthorn/Kew, VIC
Job Type: Flexible hours, part-time, live-in position

About the role:

Living alongside residents, House Managers are the backbone of Servants’ unique housing model. Whilst every day looks different, their key purpose is to build strong relationships and a genuine sense of community amongst the residents. House Managers also keep an eye out for every resident, helping to ensure we can proactively provide access to greater support, and are our first responders when residents have issues, disputes or ideas about the house. Attending weekly staff meetings and completing other tasks around the home, House Managers are the ones who create and maintain the environment where every resident is known and loved, and can thrive within.

RELIEF HOUSE MANAGERS

Relief House Managers stay on-site for short periods of time (anywhere from 1 night to a few weeks) to provide our full-time house managers with a break while they go on holiday. Relief House Managing is a voluntary position, and reimbursement is provided for reasonable expenses occurred while living on-site. While living on-site, relief house managers can leave the property (for example, to work, study or attend functions), but agree to sleep on-site and remain a key contact for residents throughout their stay. Relief house managers may be a single person managing by themselves, or a married couple who manage the property together during their stay.

WOMEN’S HOUSE MANAGER

Our women’s house provides accomodation for up to six single women aged 25+, including women who have experienced domestic violence. Our women’s house manager lives on-site and has her own bedroom and ensuite, sharing kitchen, dining, lounge and laundry with residents. A separate bungalow accommodation for our women’s house manager is currently being built, which will increase our capacity to seven women residents. This is a voluntary position, however the women’s house manager lives rent-free and has all utilities (electricity, gas, water, internet) provided at no cost. The women’s house manager sleeps at the property, but is not required to be at the property 24/7.

Specific tasks include:

  • Living on-site
  • Providing a warm, welcoming presence for residents
  • Responding to resident questions, concerns and queries
  • Joining a weekly 1-hour team check-in with our CEO and Tenancy Manager
  • Attend occasional training
  • Liaising with residents’ case workers and support staff
  • Depending on the property, topping up tea/coffee/sugar and putting out daily breakfast (cereal, bread)

About you:

You will have:

  • a heart for building community and desire to see people succeed
  • a caring, patient, warm and welcoming nature
  • maturity, and an ability to remain calm under pressure
  • a non-judgemental attitude, especially towards people who experience homelessness, mental illness and domestic violence
  • resilience and a ‘can-do’ attitude

And you will be:

  • passionate about community
  • someone with a strong work ethic
  • able to work independently and communicate well with a team
  • self-aware, with the maturity to recognise and communicate when you are tired or need support

Working with Servants, you’ll experience:

  • A meaningful way to make a difference in the local community
  • A passionate, caring team
  • Flexibility, and opportunity to grow

Please note: In order to protect our residents from infection, the successful applicant must have received at least 2 vaccinations against COVID-19.

With Servants Community Housing, you’ll be helping provide respect and dignity to diverse people. Your patience, gentleness and love for people will help us create communities where respect, dignity, hope, and opportunity are nurtured.
